Summer for sure - at last...
During May I kept meaning to write something about how I could tell that winter was over. But it kept snowing and I just never got around to it.
So here we are at the second week in June. The rivers are running bank-to-bank full with all that snow that is melting because it has been so hot.
I heard an interesting story last week. People were out for a ride in the carriage which starts from Elkhorn Lodge and goes around the downtown area. The horse which pulls the carriage is a beautiful Percheron that I call Blackie. As I haven't been formally introduced, I don't know if that's his real name.
The carriage was stopped on MacGregor waiting for a break in the traffic to turn west on Elkhorn and head for the barn.
There was a Stanley Steamer coming east on Elkhorn, having just made the turn from Riverside. And as it picked up speed, the boiler made a hissing/popping sound.
Blackie was startled and jumped out into traffic at a speed his driver couldn't have anticipated. She jumped down to grab his bridle and whisper in his ear. He dragged her and the carriage up on the sidewalk before she could stop him. I think she may have broken her leg in the effort.
There used to be a nightly entertainment here called "Western Justice" where actors playing outlaws rode into Bond Park and had a pretend shoot-out with the sheriff. That was based on our image of the frontier, as there is no record of gun-slinging desperados in Estes. The confrontation between a horse and a car was a real life enactment of something that could have happened here a hundred years ago.
If you want to eat like a pioneer, both the Elkhorn Lodge 586-4416 and the Elk Meadow RV Resort 586-5342 are having chuckwagon suppers this year. The evenings include entertainment by cowboy singers. Channel your inner Dale Evans or Roy Rogers by spending an evening in a simpler time.
Let me know if you have memories of early - or later day - events in Estes by emailing me at estespetsitter@gmail.com
In the meantime, read a book or see a movie or talk to somebody you enjoy.
